In Between the Dog Seizures

When your dog has epilepsy, it’s easy to focus on the seizures themselves, the scary moments that leave your heart racing and your mind spinning. But what I’ve learned over the years with Ruby is that the time in between the seizures matters just as much. Those calm, everyday moments are when healing happens, routines form, and life together continues.

In this blog, I want to share how I think about “the in-between” — the space where love, care, and quiet observation really make a difference.

The “In-Between” Is Where We Rebuild

After seizures (Ruby always has more than one when they start), Ruby is tired and a little out of it. I give her time to rest and keep things calm. But once she’s back to herself, that’s when I focus on the small, steady things that help her body and mind stay balanced, things like good nutrition, consistency, rest, and low stress.

It’s easy to feel like we’re just waiting for the next seizure, but I’ve learned the opposite is true: this in-between time is where the most important care happens.

What I Focus On Between Seizures

Here are some of the ways I use that time to support Ruby and keep her as healthy and happy as possible:

  • Stay consistent with medication. I treat every dose like a non-negotiable part of her day.

  • Track her behavior and energy. I make note of anything that feels different — appetite, mood, coordination — because small changes can mean a lot.

  • Keep her stress low. I try to stick to predictable routines and avoid overstimulation. Calm days really do help.

  • Offer enrichment that’s gentle. Snuffle mats, sniff walks, or lick pads give her mental activity without too much exertion.

  • Celebrate the quiet days. Every calm, seizure-free day is a gift. I try to pause and appreciate it, instead of worrying about what might come next.

It’s Okay to Breathe

There’s something beautiful about realizing that even in the midst of managing a lifelong condition, life goes on. Ruby still naps in the sunshine, wags her tail when I come in the room, and finds joy in the same little things she always has.

The seizures are part of her story, but they aren’t all of it, and the in-between moments are where her spirit really shines.

You’re Doing Better Than You Think

If you’re in that in-between season feeling anxious, waiting, wondering I want you to know you’re doing an amazing job. Every dose given on time, every gentle walk, every note in your seizure tracker adds up to something powerful: stability and care rooted in love.
