Help to Remember Your Dog’s Meds
If your dog takes daily seizure medication, you already know how important it is to stay consistent. Missing even one dose or giving it late can throw everything off balance. I’ve been there with Ruby, and I’ll be honest: it took me a little while to find a rhythm that truly worked.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few simple tricks that make giving medication on time much easier and a lot less stressful.
Set Alarms
This one might sound obvious, but it’s the easiest way to stay on track. I set alarms on my phone for Ruby’s morning and evening doses. It might seem small, but hearing that chime twice a day keeps me accountable—no guessing, no forgetting. Ruby has learned that is “her” sound and this sound means treats!
Build It Into a Routine
Pair your dog’s medication with something you already do every day.
For example:
Morning meds right after your first cup of coffee
Evening meds right after dinner or brushing your teeth
Ruby’s meds are paired with her morning and evening meals. It’s just become a part of our routine. When you link it to a habit that’s already automatic, it quickly becomes second nature.
Use a Pill Organizer
A simple weekly pill box can be a lifesaver. It helps you instantly see if you missed a dose and takes away the mental load of “Did I already give it?” I fill Ruby’s each Sunday, and it makes the rest of the week smooth sailing. It also helps me stay on top of when I need to call in Ruby’s refills.
Try a Reminder App
If you prefer tech, there are plenty of free medication reminder apps. Many even let you track when you gave each dose, so you can share that info with your vet if needed.
Plan Ahead for Busy Days or Travel
Make sure someone else who can be your dog’s medication helper knows what to do and where everything is. Having your dog’s medication and supplies all in one location, along with directions, makes it easy for someone else to step in to help if needed. Ruby has her own shelf and a designated family member who can help if my husband and I are gone during a medication time.
Give Yourself Grace
Even with the best systems, life happens. Ask your vet ahead of time what to do if you miss a dose. Don’t beat yourself up. Simply get back on track. You’re doing your best for your dog, and that’s what matters most.
