Seizure Tracker: An Important Tool
When Ruby had her first few seizures, I felt like I was fumbling in the dark. I had no idea how often they’d come, how long they’d last, or whether the medication was helping. Over time, the one tool that changed everything for me was a seizure tracker, and I’m so glad I started using it. I want to share why a seizure tracker matters so much, how to use one, and how it became a quiet superpower in caring for Ruby.
Why Use a Seizure Tracker?
When I started logging Ruby’s seizures, patterns began to emerge. With pages of notes, I went from guessing to being able to predict when seizures might occur.
A seizure tracker helps you:
See patterns over time
Provide better info to your vet when adjusting meds
Spot triggers or changes early
Feel more in control during uncertain times
What Should Your Tracker Include?
My tracker is simple, but it gives me more clarity than I ever expected. Each entry includes:
Date & Time — when the seizure happened
Duration — how long it lasted
Type / Symptoms — e.g. stiffening, paddling, drooling, collapsing
Before & After Behavior — changes in mood, appetite, disorientation
Possible Triggers / Notes — stress, missed meds, excitement
Comments — anything else you observed
Even short notes help.
How to Use the Tracker in Real Life
Keep it accessible — a notebook, app, or printable sheet
Enter details as soon as possible, while fresh in your mind
Review your tracker periodically — look for clusters or trends
Bring it to vet appointments — it’s very helpful information for veterinarians.
My Experience with the Tracker
After tracking Ruby’s seizures for months and years, her seizure tracker helped us identify her seizure patterns, which helps us prepare for them. It has also helped us determine if her medications are working - which they are! The tracker stopped being a “nice to have” and became an essential tool.
